Family Book Brigade Parade set for Aug. 25

Full Description:

Carry books from old library to new Organizers are counting down to the day that the new Coeur d’Alene Public Library will open for the public. The first event to celebrate the near completion of our new facility will be the Family Book Brigade Parade, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 25. Individuals, families and groups who can come up with some interesting ways to carry a representative collection of books are needed to be part of the Book Brigade. This parade – intended for non-motorized entries – will travel from the current library site at 201 E. Harrison Ave. to the new library site, 702 E. Front Ave. Participants must register by July 31, by visiting the library to pick up a registration/information form. The form is also dispalyed below. The Book Brigade can include decorated wheelbarrows, bikes, bike trailers, little red wagons – anything creative people can come up with. “We have had a lot of families watching the new library construction with interest and asking the staff when it will open,” said David Townsend, Library Communications Coordinator. “We thought it would be appropriate that the first celebration related to the new library be one specifically for children and families.” Library Director Bette Ammon said that she anticipates that the Harrison Avenue library will close the week of Aug. 26 and the new library will open near the end of the first full week of September. “A professional mover will be used to transport the actual library collection to the new library,” Ammon said, “so we are going to use the Book Brigade to help us carry the books to be offered in the Friends of the Library bookstore – Second Story Books. It’s going to be a fun event. I’m planning to play my kazoo during the parade. We have a few other surprises planned, too.” Entries in the parade will line up at the old library beginning at 9 a.m. and the parade will get under way at 10 a.m. The route will follow Harrison Avenue east to Fifth Street and south to Front Avenue, where it will continue on the Centennial Trail east to the new library. Participants will be met by volunteers at the front door where the books will be collected and moved to Second Story Books. Young Book Brigade participants must be accompanied by an adult. Due to the installation of shelving and furniture, participants won’t be able to enter the building during this event, but will gather near the fountain on the west side of the building for refreshments. Sponsors for the Family Book Brigade include the City of Coeur d’Alene, the Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library. Ruth Pratt, Executive Director for the Library Foundation said that activities are being developed to recognize contributors to the new library – a joint project of the Foundation, the City and the Lake City Development Corporation – and to involve the whole community in the dedication/grand opening of the facility. The new Coeur d’Alene Public Library will house 38,500 square feet on two floors. information on the design and photos of the construction are available at the library website, http://www.cdalibrary.org/. Information on the Family Book Brigade is available by contacting Townsend at 208/769-2315 or by e-mailing dtown@cdalibrary.org.
